Different ball

title

“Another day, another rejection,” Bobby sighed, his round body rolling dejectedly across the dusty square. He bumped into a sharp corner, a familiar sting.

“Oof! Watch it, roundy!” snapped a passing square. Bobby didn’t respond. He was used to it. In a world of perfectly formed squares, he, Bobby, was…different. A perfectly round ball, a glaring anomaly.

“Why can’t I just be…square?” he mumbled to himself, kicking a small pebble.

Suddenly, a sweet voice piped up, “Why would you want to be square?”

Bobby looked up. Standing before him was a smaller square, her edges unusually soft, almost rounded. Her name was Squara.

“Because…everyone else is,” Bobby mumbled, kicking another pebble. "Squares are…perfect. I'm just…different.”

Squara tilted her head, her flat face expressing genuine curiosity. “Different? I think ‘different’ is rather nice. It's…interesting.”

Bobby blinked. No one had ever said anything like that. “Interesting? But…I don’t fit in. Nobody wants to play with me. I even tried changing, you know? Rolling into corners, hoping to get some edges. It hurt, a lot.”

Squara giggled, a soft, tinkling sound. “Oh, Bobby! You don’t need to change. You're…you’re wonderfully round! Look, even my edges aren’t perfectly sharp. We’re all a little…different, in our own way.”

She picked up a small, smooth stone, perfectly round. “See? Even in a world of squares, there's room for circles.” She rolled the stone gently, mimicking Bobby's movements.

Bobby watched her, mesmerized. For the first time, he felt…seen. Not judged, not rejected, but seen. He felt a warmth spread through him, something he hadn’t felt before. He was beginning to understand what it meant to be loved, not for what he could change himself into, but for who he was.

Days turned into weeks. Bobby and Squara became the best of friends, playing games only they could invent. Bobby learned to love his roundness, its smooth curves and effortless rolls. He discovered that being different wasn’t a weakness, but a strength. His roundness allowed him to do things squares couldn't; roll through tight spaces, tumble down hills with joyous abandon.

Then, one sunny afternoon, Squara confessed, her usually crisp voice wavering slightly, “Bobby, I…I’m falling for you.”

Bobby’s heart, for the first time, felt a different kind of rolling. A happy, excited kind of rolling. He looked at Squara, her soft-edged square face filled with a sweet, hopeful expression.

He smiled, a genuine, radiant smile, “I… I think I’m falling for you too, Squara.”

But then, a dramatic change swept through the square world. The entire land suddenly began to gently curve… and to Bobby and Squara’s surprise, the world was not a flat plane of squares anymore. It was, in fact, a giant sphere! And suddenly, Bobby's roundness was no longer different. It was perfectly, wonderfully...normal.
